P.A.S.A. is dedicated to the community of surfers of the area. Women, men, longboarders, shortboarders, grommets and greybeards — we’re all part of the surfing family. And, just like any other family, we need to keep in touch. Here’s two ways.

THE ANNOUNCEMENT LIST

Qué P.A.S.A. is the official soapbox of P.A.S.A. It’s not spam, or unsolicited commercial email (or whatever the marketers call it these days), just a way to keep you informed of what’s going on with the Philadelphia Area Surfing Association.

Of course, if you want a less one-sided mode of contact with other surfers in the Philadelphia Area, you can sign up for Wavelengths, the official (whatever that means) discussion list for the Philadelphia Area Surfing Association. You can find out some more by checking out the official home of Wavelengths:

There’s times when mainstream surf media really annoys me. Now is one of them.

In a recent issue of a magazine that shall remain nameless, a good deal of editorial content focused on the idea of localism and the effects thereof. Threats are made, property damaged, and stories of both are recounted from both sides. Sometimes, it seems, almost with fondness.

Frankly, I just don’t get it.

Perhaps I’m just really lucky to never have encountered localism. Perhaps I’m just too blissed out on surfing to notice it. Maybe, being a right coaster, I just surf places that are too popular to be considered "secret spots." After all, it’s a little hard to claim a beach break is "secret" if it’s located off an exit of the Atlantic City Expressway.

I can understand a certain degree of pride in a favorite spot (after all, as a Philadelphia surfer, I am always surfing in someone else’s state or country) but I think that pride is better manifested by cleaning up beach trash than waxing someone’s windshield. Or worse. I try and show some positive pride on every beach I visit, regardless of who thinks it’s "their" beach.

The argument of "too many people in the water" doesn’t work either. With an estimated quarter of the world’s population living in coastal areas (a little more than half the U.S. population lives in coastal zones) guess what? You’re going to run into some other people. Don’t like it? Wake up earlier. Or buy an island and move there. And if you don’t like these ideas, maybe you should quit surfing. The surfers who came before you - you know, the ones that tolerated you when you were the interloper - will probably be happy to be rid of your negativity. I know I will.

(To be honest, I do remember one time I faced some localism. In Panama, when a bunch of Californians were hassling me on this nice little point break, trying to get me to paddle in. Of course, the Panamanians I was with wouldn’t hear of it, and kept giving me waves. One of the Panamanians, a body boarder, was pretty big so eventually the "locals" backed down and the yelling ceased. That night, the Panamanians and I shared some drinks and talked quite a bit of story. So, yeah, I was victim of some bullies who thought they owned something they clearly didn’t. Hmm.)

It took about twenty minutes of analyzing wave models and ten seconds of rationalization for this email. After all, a potential decent swell versus a day spent absorbing fluorescent lighting proved no contest.

My recent workload, lightened due to my obsessive need to complete projects as soon as I get them, left my dance card clear enough to do this. The email wasn’t a lie, merely a creative distillation of the truth. My appointment with Doctor Neptune was long overdue.

Playing hooky in order to surf isn’t a recent invention. If you look at the collective history of our culture, there’s an underlying thread of ditching work in favor of waves. That’s one of the reasons 19th Century missionaries made Hawaiians give up surfing.

Admit it—you’ve done it, and probably more than once. In fact, you were probably one of the ones out last week trying to craft a story of why after a sick day, you came back tanned. "Well, you see, I have one of those sun lamps in the bathroom, and it’s the only light that works in there, and I spent so much time in there being sick, well…" These exercises in creativity are essential if you suffer a hard-line boss.

Maybe you’re one of the lucky ones whose boss surfs, too. This has the benefit of the boss saying, "Why not take the day off?" knowing what you’re going to do. The downside of a surfing boss comes from the chance you’ll duck out of work and paddle into the lineup right next to the person who can fire you.

Perhaps, like the majority of people out there, your boss doesn’t surf. One who understands how a good paycheck dims in comparison to good waves is the next best thing. These bosses don’t ask too many questions, only throwing a knowing nod your way the next time you show up for work. Acknowledging, with a little jealousy, the cliché we already know: A bad day of surfing is better than a good day of work.
